CHICAGO - Roosevelt head men's basketball coach Joe Griffin announced that Roy Ramos will join his staff as assistant men's basketball coach.

Ramos comes to Roosevelt having served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Illinois Tech for the past three seasons. He joined head coach Todd Kelly's staff in 2014 and inherited an 0-25 team; by the 2016-17 season, the Scarlet Hawks achieved a record of 22-6 and finished runner-up at the 2017 USCAA National Championships.

In his three seasons at Illinois Tech, Ramos helped recruit over 20 student-athletes that were pivotal in reviving the Illinois Tech program.

"Roy comes to us as one of the more highly-recommended small college assistants in the state," said Griffin. "What he has done with the Buckeyes and at IIT really parallels what has been done here at Roosevelt, in terms of starting a program from scratch, and also sustaining success along the way.  AAU teams seem to come and go from year to year, but the Buckeyes are in their 10th year and are as solid as ever.  Furthermore, what Roy and Todd Kelly were able to do at IIT was remarkable, taking their team from 0-25 to 22-6 in just three seasons.  Roy has strong local recruiting connections throughout Chicagoland and we are counting on Roy to help our program achieve unprecedented success this year and beyond. "

"I am extremely excited and fortunate to be joining not only a well-respected and established basketball program, but also to work at a university that values providing education and opportunity to all," Ramos said. "Coach Griffin is a highly respected coach in the basketball community. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to learn and grown under his guidance. I'm looking forward to building relationships with the players and helping them work toward their goals both on and off the court."

Within his role at Roosevelt, Ramos will also direct intramural programming and the fitness center for the campus.

Ramos joins a Laker squad primed for their best season yet, as they return four starters and nine of their top 10 scorers from last year, led by senior captain Josh Dillingham and CCAC Honorable Mention junior Jake Ludwig.  The Lakers return 77% of their scoring and 86% of rebounding.

Prior to Illinois Tech, Ramos played for and coached under legendary coach Gene Pingatore of St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Ill.  During two seasons as a coach at St. Joseph, the Chargers achieved a record of 41-20.  The Chargers won back to back regional championships from 2012-2014 and the Catholic League Conference Championship in the 2013-2014 season. St. Joseph finished the 2013-2014 season ranked #7 in the state.

Ramos is the director of Buckeyes Basketball, Rising Student Athletes Inc. which is an academically-based youth basketball program for boys and girls in the Chicagoland area. Over the years, Buckeyes Basketball has grown from 12 student-athletes to over 100 fielding travel teams from grades 5th-11th. Buckeyes Basketball has a 100% high school graduation rate and 98% college enrollment.

Ramos was born and raised in Cicero, Ill. In 2010, he graduated from North Park University with degrees in Business and Economics and Communication Studies. He currently resides in Chicago.
