Ryan O'Connor struck out a team single-game record 10 batters as the Roosevelt baseball team capped the 2012 season with a 6-1 victory over visiting IIT on Sunday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium.
The Lakers finished the year winning six of their final seven games to post a 12-27 overall record and 11-16 mark in the CCAC.
Making his third start of the year, O'Connor worked 7.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits en route to his first career win. O'Connor got into a groove early, striking out the side in the first inning after giving up a leadoff double. He would go to fan one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and fifth and then two more in the sixth for his 10 strikeouts.
Freshman
Alex Miramontes came on in relief and struck out a pair as well in 1.2 innings.
Roosevelt got on the board first with senior
Nick Calhoun (2-for-5, RBI) driving in a run on a groundout in the second inning. The Lakers added another tally in the third on a two-out RBI single off the bat of freshman
Joe Lyons, then made the score 3-0 with a run in the fifth. Roosevelt added an insurance run in the seventh on a
Tim Storrs (2-for-2, RBI) sacrifice fly.
After IIT (5-32, 4-23) cut the Lakers lead to 4-1 in the top of the eighth, Roosevelt got the run right back and added another. Calhoun tripled and scored on a Scarlet Hawks error and senior
Tyler Turner (2-for-5, RBI) knocked in a run with a single to right for the final 6-1 margin.
Luis Montoya was the losing pitcher of record, falling to 1-3 this season after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings.
