St. Louis, Mo. – Freshman John Franco struck gold in the 81st minute as his first goal of the season broke a 1-1 deadlock and gave the Roosevelt men's soccer team its first win of the season with a triumph over host Harris-Stowe State College on Saturday afternoon at CBC High School.
The Lakers (1-0-1) opened the scoring versus the Hornets (0-2-0) in the 20th minute when freshman Andrew Obamaly found the back of the net off an assist from Drew Smith. It was his first collegiate tally.
Roosevelt held its lead through intermission, but Harris-Stowe got the equalizer in the 65th minute.
The score remained knotted until Franco's strike in the 81st minute from 30 yards out put the Lakers in front.
Freshman keeper Jake Cigelnik made six critical saves for his first win.
The Lakers will look to remain undefeated on the season when they continue their St. Louis road trip with a Monday stop at Missouri Baptist.
