Macomb, Ill – The Roosevelt men's tennis team opened its 2012 fall schedule over the weekend with the Lakers competing in the Art Peterson Invitational hosted by Western Illinois University. The event, which took place on Friday and Saturday, September 7-8, featured individual singles and doubles flights with student-athletes representing NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and NAIA institutions a part of the draw.
The tournament featured the debut of three Roosevelt newcomers in rookies Matt Kuntzi, Trenton Jones and Dalton Rothe, as well as junior Brett Hoffman, who was making his first appearance on the tennis court after participating the last two seasons for the Roosevelt baseball team. Returnees Danny White and Rory Stewart provided veteran experience for the Green and White over the weekend.
The Lakers were unable to win a match in the two-day event, going 0-12 in singles play and 0-6 in doubles competition, but showed promise for the season ahead after testing their skills against some of the area's top competition. Six of the team's losses came at the hands of NCAA Division I opponents, while three more came at the hands of reigning Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion, Olivet Nazarene.
Roosevelt will continue individual play on Sept. 21 when the Lakers participate in the USTA/ITA Central—East Regional Tournament hosted by Olivet Nazarene.
