Milwaukee, Wis. – Despite a career-high 21 kills from sophomore Vanessa Owusu, the Roosevelt volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday night as host Cardinal Stritch earned a four-set victory over the Lakers, 29-27, 25-16, 21-25, 25-16 in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference showdown.
The setback drops Roosevelt to 8-5 on the season and 1-2 in CCAC play. The Wolves improved to 8-3 and 1-1 in the league.
The Lakers seemed poised the take control of the match early on Tuesday as five kills from Owusu sparked a 5-1 run that staked Roosevelt to a 24-21 lead in the opening set. Cardinal Stritch stormed back, though, thwarting three match points before taking a 25-24 advantage of its own. The two teams then traded points until the Wolves finally prevailed, 29-27.
Cardinal Stritch jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and cruised to a 25-16 triumph. The Lakers would not go quietly with a key service run by Morgan Reinert helping Roosevelt get back in the match with a 25-21, third-set win. The Wolves regained control in the fourth set, pulling away to close out the match, 25-16.
Owusu continued her streak of double-digit kill outings, pushing her run to six matches while topping the 20-kill plateau for the first time. She also added four blocks and two digs on the night.
Monique Morris paced the Wolves with 17 kills. Melissa Murphy tabbed a match-high 23 digs.
Roosevelt will be back in action on Friday, when the Lakers return home for a non-conference match versus Mount Mercy.
