Springfield, Ill. – The Roosevelt men's soccer team played Benedictine-Springfield to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at the SHG Sports Complex, marking the third time in its first five games the Lakers have been deadlocked with their opponent after 110 minutes of play.
Roosevelt (1-1-3) got on the scoreboard first against the Bulldogs (0-3-1) as freshman Leo Rodriguez converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute. It marked the first career goal for Rodriguez.
Despite continuing to pepper Benedictine-Springfield keeper Jordan Greene, who made 23 saves on the night, the Lakers could not improve on their one goal advantage. That would cost Roosevelt as the Bulldogs netted an equalizing goal in the 74th minute. Pablo Lazlo scored the game-tying tally for Benedictine-Springfield.
Roosevelt continued to press for the win, including putting six shot on frame in the two overtime sessions, but could not find the back of the net.
Lakers keeper Jose Ortiz made 13 saves of his own in goal, aiding the Lakers in leaving Springfield with a result.
After playing its last four matches on the road, Roosevelt returns to the friendly confines of Toyota Park on Saturday for a showdown with #7 Bethel (Tenn.). This will mark the first time the Lakers have squared off with a nationally-ranked opponent. Kick-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
