Naperville, Ill. – The Roosevelt women's tennis opened its 2012 fall campaign on Sunday afternoon at North Central College, dropping a 9-0 decision to the host Cardinals at the NCC Tennis Courts.
North Central, which already had seven prior matches under its belt this season, showed its experience in doubles play, sweeping the three matches. The Cardinals then claimed victory in all six singles contest to level their record at 4-4 on the year.
The most contested match came at No. 1 singles as Roosevelt junior Carina Balan battled Jenny Velasquez in a back-and-forth contest. Balan took the opening set, 6-2, and led in the second set, but Velasquez rallied back to push the match into a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5. Velasquez took an early lead in the 10-point tiebreaker, but this time is was Balan that came back to knot the score at 8-8. Velasquez followed by breaking Balan to put match point on her own serve, which she capitalized on to close out the see-saw affair, 10-8.
The Lakers will be back in action on Sept. 21 at the USTA-ITA Central-East Regional held at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill.
