Chicago, Ill. – The Roosevelt women's tennis team made its 2012-13 home debut on Sunday, but its return to the friendly confines of Diversey Tennis Center proved to be bittersweet as the Lakers were edged by visiting Marian, 5-4.
Roosevelt was in control of the match early after taking two of three doubles matches. The tandems of Carina Balan and Shaina Nolley and Feven Haile and Ernesta Ignotaite both won by 8-5 margins. The Lakers just missed a clean sweep in doubles with Roosevelt's Danielle Smith and Valerie Vasquez outlasted in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (8).
That point proved to be the difference as Marian rallied to take four of the six singles contests to claim the match. Balan and Smith notched singles triumphs for the Lakers with Balan doing so in tiebreaking fashion.
Roosevelt will return to the court on Oct. 5 when the Lakers compete in the Western Illinois Invitational.
