
Whiting, Ind. – Day two of the inaugural CCAC Crossover Tournament proved to be a repeat of the first day's action for the Roosevelt volleyball team as the Lakers dropped their opening match in four sets only to rebound to sweep its opponent in the nightcap of its two contests. Roosevelt started the day with a 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 setback at the hands of CCAC South Division leader Trinity Christian and then swept tournament host Calumet-St. Joseph, 25-11, 25-20, 25-14.
Roosevelt concluded the tournament with a 2-2 ledger with its two losses coming to teams with a combined 20-2 league record. The split helped the Lakes retain third place in the CCAC North Division at 6-5, while head coach Kelly Fitzgerald's crew is now 14-9 overall on the season.
In the opener, Roosevelt stormed out to a 6-0 lead and took the opening set from Trinity Chrisitan, 26-24. The Trolls bounced back, though, to take the next three sets to close out the match.
Trinity Christian's Kaitlin Feddema just missed a 20-20 with 19 kills and 21 digs. Freshman Najoua Alioualla paced the Lakers with 17 kills, with sophomore Vanessa Owusu adding 14 kills and five blocks. Freshman libero Arielle Nausieda posted a match-high tying 21 digs to go with three service aces.
Roosevelt shook off the loss to Trinity Christian and rolled past Calumet-St. Joseph in straight sets.
Owusu totaled 12 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Valerie Cutrone recorded 11 kills and eight digs in the win.
The Lakers will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Deerfield, Ill., to take on Trinity International at 7:00 p.m.
