East Moline, Ill. – Freshman Kyle Martens shot a career-low 76 to help stake the Roosevelt men's golf team to a sixth place finish following the opening round of the Ashford Invitational at Short Hills Country Club.
Martens was one of three Lakers to card a sub-80 round with freshman Trevor Berry and junior Aaron Wheeler each firing a 79. Junior Jeremy Scott finished with an 83 for Roosevelt's final team scoring round. The Lakers finished with a stroke total of 317.
Roosevelt is within striking distance of the top three heading into Tuesday's final round of the Ashford Invitational, trailing St. Ambrose by nine strokes and Holy Cross by 10 shots. Host Ashford leads the event after firing an opening round 295.
