Deerfield, Ill. – Sophomore Vanessa Owusu's match-high 19 kills paced the Roosevelt volleyball team to a 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-22 victory over host Trinity International on Tuesday night at the Myers Sports Complex.
The win helped the Lakers maintain a half-game lead for third place in the CCAC North Division over Judson at 7-5, while pushing the team's overall record to 15-9. The Trojans slipped to 7-16 and 4-8 in league play.
Roosevelt and TIU split the first two sets on Tuesday before the Lakers jumped out to a 6-1 advantage to run away with set three (25-14). Roosevelt then held off a late Trojans rally in the fourth set to close out the match (25-22).
While Owusu's kill output and efficient .305 attack percentage led the Lakers' offensive attack, freshman Aleesha Cleaver's continued progression at the setter position was a key to the team's success. Cleaver totaled a team-best 38 assists on the night, while adding five kills on seven attempts, nine digs and two blocks. Freshman libero Arielle Nausieda recorded a team-best 13 digs for Roosevelt.
The Lakers, who have played their last nine matches on the road, will return home on Thursday to square off with Cardinal Stritch in a critical CCAC North Division showdown at 7:00 p.m.
