Clinton, Iowa – Junior Casey Davis led all scorers with 19 points, and junior Maria Tamburrino added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds to guide the Roosevelt women's basketball team to a 60-48 season-opening road win at Ashford on Thursday.
Rookie Devin Talley came off the bench to pitch in 10 points, while junior Tori Clark helped the Lakers (1-0) fight through foul trouble by playing clutch minutes at the point.
Both teams faced some offensive struggles, but the Roosevelt defense tightened in the second half and held Ashford (0-1) to 7-for-35 shooting in the game's final 20 minutes.
"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take any win on the road," said head coach Robyn Scherr-Wells. "We had a much better defensive showing than the exhibition at Lewis last weekend, and we got stops when we needed them.
"Casey and Maria were the difference-makers," Scherr-Wells continued. "Tori came in to play point guard when Becky [Williford] picked up her fourth foul and really stepped up, even with four fouls herself."
Roosevelt returns to Chicago for its home opener against Clarke University on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at the UIC Physical Education Building.
